Walthamstow has a mela every year organised by the council - in 2013 they asked Serious to programme and produce it. I joined their team to manage planning and delivery of the event.
We worked closely with the council's mela committee which was made up of community representatives and a councillor or two. This was vital for the success of the event - to listen carefully to what they wanted and what they'd done in the past, and to suggest creative additions that would work for them.
Certain elements were very important such as traditional games like kabadi and stone throwing. And for the stage Serious programmed a vibrant mix of younger and older artists such as Shizzio, Mumzy Stranger and Malkit Singh.
I had never worked on a mela before so it was a great learning experience.
